President's Message
On behalf of the 2000 members of the Jacksonville Association of Fire Fighters (JAFF), it is my pleasure to welcome you to our new website.
Jacksonville’s fire fighters have a long history of protecting our great city. From our very first alarm in 1886, we have always answered the call to keep our city’s families and business safe.
Since those early days, our profession has become very complex, requiring firefighters to do more than simply fight fires. While we still fight a lot of fire, our duties now also include providing top notch emergency medical care, hazardous materials response, and urban search and rescue as part of a vast state and national disaster response network. In essence, we are unique problem solvers, called upon to fix any issue.
And when we first put on that uniform and take the oath to serve, every Jacksonville fire fighter knows that they must also give back to our beloved city, both on and off the job. Throughout the year, we engage in many community-based projects that provide resources and support to help move our community forward. Through our Jacksonville Firefighters Charities, you will see us out there filling the boot for children with neuromuscular diseases, supporting various veterans charities, and cooking for many events across the city.
The JAFF is also engaged in efforts for positive change within the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department. We advocate to make a very dangerous job as safe as possible. This includes making sure our fire fighters are properly trained and equipped, ensuring we pursue the most advanced cancer prevention efforts, and that we are always working to strengthen behavioral health programs to help our fire fighters rebound from tough gut-wrenching emergencies no one should experience once, not to mention time and time again for years on end.
Additionally, we work with elected officials to educate them on issues affecting public safety, so they can make the best decisions on how to keep us safe, and we engage in the local political process to make sure we have a seat at the table when it comes to making those critical decisions.
As a 22-year member of the JAFF leadership team, and now serving as its President, It is an honor and privilege to be a small part of the many successes our union has achieved on behalf of our now more than 2000 active and retired fire fighters. Every day, our firefighters report to fire stations all across our great city and are willing to put their lives on the line for the citizens and visitors whom they have likely never even met. I am proud to represent them and look forward to continuing the tradition of protecting our city and its fire fighters.
Sincerely,
President, Jacksonville Association of Fire Fighters
